Oscar Fernandez, 91, of Elizabeth, NJ, passed away on Saturday, November 12, 2022. He was born in Guantanamo, Cuba, and came to New York City in 1955. His work history included the Singer Sewing Machine Company and the Sunshine Biscuit Company. He worked as a bartender and eventually co-owned the first Latin nightclub/restaurant in Upper Manhattan (Washington Heights) called “El Torero” between the 1960s and 1970s. Before his retirement, he owned a small grocery store in New York City. He collected rare coins and stamps from all over the world. He enjoyed gardening and repairing things in his small tool shed behind his home.
He is predeceased by his son, Oscar Yuri Fernandez.
He leaves behind his wife of 64 years Aneli Fernandez, his son Rafael Fernandez and his daughter and son-in-law, Anely and Mark Ninonuevo and 6 grandchildren, Kristin, Lauren, Xenia, Carolyn, Alexis, and Ivan and 5 great-grandchildren, Barrett, Julia, Annabelle, Angelina and Rafael.
Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation on Saturday, December 3, 2022, from 12pm-3pm at the Petruccelli Funeral Home, 232 Christine Street, Elizabeth, NJ.
