Hilda I. Mateo, a lifelong resident of New York, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 23, 2025.
Throughout her life, Hilda was devoted to the service of others. She spent 15 years as a crisis counselor at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in NYC, where she offered compassion, strength, and guidance to those facing difficult times. In 2005, her commitment to the community was recognized when Mayor Michael Bloomberg appointed her to the HIV Planning Council, where she worked tirelessly to advocate for individuals living with HIV and to improve access to vital care and resources.
Hilda’s love for life was evident in her many passions. She found joy in music, dancing, and traveling, often returning to her beloved Puerto Rico, as well as visiting Florida and the sacred site of Lourdes. Her vibrant spirit, warmth, and unwavering kindness touched all who knew her.
Above all, Hilda was a devoted and hardworking mother. With limited means but endless love, she provided for her family and instilled in them the values of resilience, compassion, and hope.
Hilda is survived by her loving son, Eric Rivero. She was predeceased by her beloved son, Robert Michael Garcia. Her memory will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched.
She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
